Abstract:

Letter of Credit (LC) opening banks receive transport and other documents from the LC issuing bank through banking channels. Upon receiving, bankers scrutinize the documents to find out if there is a deviation or discrepancies as per previously agreed contract. Based on the primary data, identified discrepancies are grouped into four categories. These are missing information, mismatch of information, non-submission of documents and others. The data are then analyzed with R Program. The study reveals that, mismatch information in warranty certificates is the most common discrepancy. Most of the cases have only one discrepancy. The study also identified potential outliers like- mismatch information in currency, quality assurance certificate and country of origin. Regression analysis shows that there is no significant relationship between the values of LC and number of discrepancies.
